There seems to be a little "Indian Summer" for the next week, but so far the Autumn has been unsettled with lots of snow up high. Huts and lifts are closed for the season so the mountains are quiet - but it takes some extra effort to get up there...
We climbed the Pointe de Mourti on Monday, starting from the carpark at 8.30am. Late season means you're not racing the heat of the day - you'd usually have to start this climb from the hut at dawn. It is the classic Moiry glacier summit but when it's buried in soft snow it's quite challenging!
Hoping to find some more technical rock we went to the Couronne de Bréona next. You can traverse this in either direction but we went North to South. Snowy mixed climbing in crampons on the shady side, but luckily it was dry on the summit ridge and the South-facing descent!
