A more challenging Intermediate Mountaineering Course tackling harder Swiss peaks at AD/AD+ standard.

This intermediate climbing course is designed for those with prior alpine experience or regular rock climbing and winter mountaineering (to UK Severe/VS and Scottish winter grade III). It can be combined our Alpine Progression week to make 2 weeks of technical climbing at progressively harder grades.

According to conditions we can climb a variety of routes, for example: Breithorn Traverse, Dent du Géant, Dent Blanche, Tour Ronde and Zinal Rothorn plus superb training routes on the Arolla peaks and rock climbs on some of Switzerland's finest crags.

Our Progression PLUS weeks are very popular and it's usually easy to match up climbers booking individually to make teams of 2.

Wednesday: Climb the Dent Blanche and return to valley

Saturday morning: Travel home - check out by 9am

*The routes climbed are flexible and will reflect the climbers previous experience (ie. not repeating routes already climbed)

This week is aimed at people who've already done some Alpine climbing at AD grade but will also suit people with UK winter (grade 2/3 min) and rock climbing experience. Fitness is important. Many hut approaches will involve 1200m ascents as the Valais doesn't have the easy lift-access of Chamonix. The Dent Blanche hut walk is 1600m ascent!

Running, cycling and gym sessions (in fact, any regular sport) all provide good fitness training for summer alpine courses, but it's hard to beat good days out in the hills. If you don't have easy access to hills, your gym training will need to be carefully planned - mountain days are long, low-intensity exercise, which is hard to replicate in short gym sessions. Strength exercises (squats, step-ups, stair-climbing with a rucksack) are gaining favour over speed exercises (running, spinning).

"Guiding is excellent - flexibility to match clients and guides to optimise experience is very impressive."
— Alan, August 2018
"It was so thrilling to climb the Dent Blanche, and the 6 of us gelled so well, it made for an absolutely amazing few days. I don't think I have ever laughed so much on a climbing trip before!"
— Katya, July 2015
