ALPINE CLIMBING INTRODUCTION

DAYS
6

RATIO
3:1

PRICE
£1,645

Our Introduction to Alpine Climbing Course covers all the essential skills and techniques of Alpine Climbing and glacier travel.

If it's your first time in the Alps, or you've been before but now want some technical instruction with IFMGA Guides, this course is for you. The low 3:1 guiding ratio all week means we can climb some of the classic Alpine Summits in the Valais region of Switzerland putting into practice skills like cramponning, glacier ropework and moving together on rocky ridges. We'll also learn crucial safety skills like crevasse rescue. Usually we'll do a rock climbing day with belaying, leading, abseiling and prusiking.

Experience of winter mountaineering and/or roped climbing is helpful but not essential. In fact many of our clients find their new Alpine skills transfer well to UK scrambling and Winter mountaineering.

The Introduction to Alpine Climbing course can prepare you to climb independently in the Alps, but also works well as training for more technical guided routes (eg our Alpine Progression course which can follow on as a 2 week trip) or simply as a first experience of Alpine climbing. Itineraries are kept flexible to suit group experience and aspirations and to make the best of the weather.

Alpine Climbing and Skiing is physically and mentally demanding so we'd like to be sure you have a suitable level of fitness and ability before arrive in the Alps. A course that is too hard will be less enjoyable for you, and possibly less safe - tired legs are more likely to trip over. Most weeks are planned with an easier "rest" day mid-week, but doing a full 6 day week in the Alps is always tiring - turning up fit means you can do more, and enjoy it more!

Running, cycling and gym sessions (in fact, any regular sport) all provide good fitness training for summer alpine courses, but it's hard to beat good days out in the hills. If you don't have easy access to hills, your gym training will need to be carefully planned - mountain days are long, low-intensity exercise, which is hard to replicate in short gym sessions. Strength exercises (squats, step-ups, stair-climbing with a rucksack) are gaining favour over speed exercises (running, spinning).

Experience using axe and crampons is helpful but not essential - skills can be taught from beginner level. Likewise, roped climbing experience is not required but good fitness is necessary to enjoy this course. Alpine hut approaches can involve 1000m ascents or more, and summit days can be up to 10 hours and 1200m of ascent, and the itinerary is flexible to allow for some easier days. You should be comfortable with UK hill walking fitness, carrying up to 10kg rucksack, and have a good head for exposure - classic UK ridges like Striding Edge on Helvelyn, or Crib Goch on Snowdon.

"I just wanted to write and express my thanks for an incredible week with Dave and fellow course members in the Alps last week on the Introduction to Alpinism course. Climbing with Dave was a real privilege: he is an incredibly inspiring and supportive teacher, a brilliant climber, and great company. It was a truly life-changing experience, and I can’t wait to return. I’m very happy to recommend the course to future potential participants."

"Great guide and instructor. We were able to adapt plans due to some challenging conditions on our initial objectives. I asked lots of questions and always received thoughtful lessons and tips."
