The Arolla valley has great ice climbing, from one pitch routes near the road, to multi pitch mountain routes with snow-shoe approaches.

It is rare to meet another team here, and you won't be queuing for routes. You can often climb 2 or more ice routes a day, with a lunchtime café stop to warm up! There is something for everyone, from introduction top-roping to vertical free standing pillars. January and February provide reliable cold conditions for our Alpine Ice Climbing Courses, meaning you'll climb many pitches of ice every day.

Ice Climbing Introduction course

Start with the basics and progress as fast and as far as you want to go. Previous rock climbing or UK winter experience helps but isn't essential, but ice climbing is hard work so you will need reasonable fitness - and arm strength!

Ice Climbing Progression course

Building on previous experience, climbing steeper, longer routes, learning to lead or just doing more climbing - this course is very flexible. You'll need good fitness - steeper ice is hard work.

We run our Introduction and Ice Climbing Progression courses in Arolla, Cogne or Kandersteg for groups of 2 (or more) over 5 or 6 days. We also offer bespoke Ice Climbing Guiding.

What's not Included?

Our Introduction to Ice Climbing Course covers:

  • Equipment choice
  • Ice climbing techniques
  • Placing ice screws, Abalokov threads other protection
  • Single and multi pitch climbs
  • Abseiling, belaying and ropework
  • Snowshoes for longer approaches
  • Choosing routes, judging conditions, avalanche risk assessment

Our Intermediate Ice Climbing Course includes:

  • Steeper climbing
  • Technique coaching
  • Leashless tools and mono points - modern equipment
  • Moving faster up and down longer routes
  • Judging snow and ice conditions
  • Learning to lead on ice

This course will be a maximum 1:2 ratio allowing more technical climbing on multi pitch routes.

Introductory courses: No prior climbing experience is required but a good level of general fitness is recommended. Some prior rock climbing experience is useful. Ice climbing needs some upper body strength, and calves can take a beating when front-pointing(!)

Progression courses: You should have done some ice and/or rock climbing before - either an Introductory course or have climbed grade 4 as a "second". No leading experience is required. Again, a good general level of fitness is recommended. A great follow on from our Introductory course but there's scope to climb WI 5/6 routes if you want to.

"Have had a fantastic time ice climbing thanks to Graham Frost of frost guiding and his lovely wife Janine, a bit mad she may be! Who on earth skis uphill!"
— RT, February 2019
"Thanks, Graham, for - once again - an amaaaaazing few days climbing. It was heaps of fun, we 'covered loads of ground', and I think you squeezed pretty much everything you could out of both of us!"
