CLIMB THE EIGER

DAYS
6

RATIO
1:1

PRICE
£3,845

A fantastic week of 1:1 guided mountaineering culminating in climbing the Eiger.

1:1 guiding for 6 days with an IFMGA Mountain Guide ensures maximum climbing time, After 3 days of acclimatisation on AD graded routes we will head to Grindelwald to climb the Eiger by the Mittellegi ridge.

The difficulty and physical challenge of climbing the Eiger should not be underestimated! It is a long and sustained rock climb with spectacular exposure from the moment you leave the hut. Getting to the hut is maybe the technical crux with some tricky climbing off the glacier. It is often said that reaching the summit is only halfway and this is very true on the Eiger - the descent of the South ridge followed by the climb back up on excellent, red gneiss to the Sudliches Eigerjoch can feel endless! Good fitness plus recent rock climbing and scrambling experience is useful. A couple of days' prior personal acclimatisation before the trip will really help.

Having our own valley accommodation means that we can maximise our summit successes by being flexible with itineraries to respond to mountain conditions.

Typical itinerary in good conditions (read a blog here)

Saturday afternoon: Arrival at Evolene accommodation from 2pm. Dinner and guides briefing from 7pm.

Sunday: Traverse of les Perrons, Emosson. High-quality rock scramble of AD (grade III) standard.

Monday to Tuesday: Ascend to Vignettes Hut (3158m) above Arolla and traverse l'Éveque.

Wednesday to Friday*: Drive to Grindelwald; ascend to Mittellegi Hut and climb the Eiger by the Mittellegi ridge descending by the South Ridge. Return to Evolene or perhaps stay at Mönchsjoch Hut, climb Mönch then return to Evolène.

Saturday morning: Travel home - check out by 9am.

*One day within these last three is "floating" to allow flexibility with summit timing to make the best of weather and mountain conditions (subject to hut availability). It could be used for rock climbing or single day ascents of alpine routes in the Arolla area (e.g. Couronne de Breona).

You should already have some Alpine experience, but UK winter grade 3/4 and rock grade Very Severe wouldn't be out of the question. Fitness is crucial. The Eiger involves pulling on fixed ropes so arm strength helps - work on this if you're not a rock climber! It involves lots of down-climbing (an over-looked skill in the UK as we can walk off most climbs). Train by linking scrambles up and down, or by going to Skye where there's no choice!

Running, cycling and gym sessions (in fact, any regular sport) all provide good fitness training for summer alpine courses, but it's hard to beat good days out in the hills. If you don't have easy access to hills, your gym training will need to be carefully planned - mountain days are long, low-intensity exercise, which is hard to replicate in short gym sessions. Strength exercises (squats, step-ups, stair-climbing with a rucksack) are gaining favour over speed exercises (running, spinning).

"Thank you so much for the arrangements made by Frost Guiding. Dan was an excellent guide, after 20 years he rates as second only to Graham for his ability, attentiveness, motivation, briefing and most importantly safety. I genuinely feel for his experience level it is testimony to just how good he is and will become which I appreciate is in part due to Graham’s input. I will undoubtedly come again. Thanks again for being so consistently enjoyable to join along and share with your amazing world."

"Thanks again for an absolutely fantastic week. Had a great time and achieved more than I thought was possible: I still can't believe I climbed the Eiger - it's a great feeling. Send my thanks again to Andy for his great guiding and company, to Steph for the food and to you both for running such a great setup. Look forward to climbing with you again!"
