ALPINE NORTH FACES

DAYS
6

RATIO
1:1

PRICE
£3,685

Climb Classic Alpine North Faces with our British Mountain Guides at a 1:1 ratio. An unforgettable experience!

Early season is prime time for good conditions with well consolidated spring snow plastered on to the classic Alpine North Faces. Climbing with crampons and 2 axes, the "fly on the wall" feeling of exposure on a big alpine face is hard to forget!

You'll need some previous climbing experience, either in the Alps or Scotland, as well as good fitness.

Possible routes include the North faces of Pigne d'Arolla, Lenzspitz, Breithorn, Gran Paradiso, Tour ronde and many others. Due to the nature of these climbs we schedule this week early season to take advantage of colder temperatures. For this reason we may use winter rooms in huts (no extra sleeping equipment required, but you should bring a warm duvet jacket).

This week is normally run on a 1:1 guiding ratio making it possible to attempt these harder climbs. If you wish to book as a pair of equal ability we can run the week 2:1 at a reduced cost (note that route choice would be limited by the higher ratio).

Please enquire for further details and prices if booking as a climbing pair (info@frostguiding.co.uk). Find out more in our blog: Alpine North Faces

Sample itinerary

Saturday afternoon: Arrival at Evolene accommodation from 2pm. Dinner and guides briefing from 7pm.

Sunday: Warm up route e.g. traverse of the Perrons, traverse of Couronne de Berona

Monday to Tuesday: Travel to Italy, climb the North face of Gran Paradiso, return to Evolene

Wednesday to Friday: Drive to Chamonix - climb Tour Ronde N. face and Contamines route on Mont Blanc du Tacul, return to Evolene

Saturday morning: Travel home - check out by 9am

You should already have some Alpine experience, but UK winter grade 3/4 and rock grade Very Severe wouldn't be out of the question. Fitness is crucial. North Faces weeks often mean carrying extra weight - 2 axes, warm clothes, etc. Strong calves help when front-pointing!

Running, cycling and gym sessions (in fact, any regular sport) all provide good fitness training for summer alpine courses, but it's hard to beat good days out in the hills. If you don't have easy access to hills, your gym training will need to be carefully planned - mountain days are long, low-intensity exercise, which is hard to replicate in short gym sessions. Strength exercises (squats, step-ups, stair-climbing with a rucksack) are gaining favour over speed exercises (running, spinning).
