OBERLAND ODYSSEY

DAYS
6

RATIO
2:1

PRICE
£2,175

This guided tour tackles the great peaks and glaciers of the Bernese Oberland, the wildest and most remote region of the Western Alps

The Jungfrau (4158m), Monch (4109m), Gross Fiescherhorn (4049m), Aletschhorn (4195m) and Finsteraarhorn (4274m) are among the 4000 meter peaks that can be climbed with our IFMGA guides in an adventurous hut-based trip after a warm-up day in the Arolla valley. Most Oberland tours start from the busy and very expensive Jungfraujoch train but there are lots of ways to access the area. Fiesch, Lotschental and Grimsel pass give long approaches with a real "expedition" feel! If you've already climbed in Arolla, Zermatt or Chamonix, the Oberland really feels on a bigger scale - every trip here is an "Odyssey"! Read our Blog to find out what a typical week involves.

The fitness requirements and technical experience required on this course are higher than Introductory Alpine climbing - expect long days and up to PD+ technical standard.

Sample itinerary

Saturday afternoon: Arrival at Evolene accommodation from 2pm. Dinner and guides briefing from 7pm.

Sunday: Warm-up Day in the Arolla or Moiry valley. Rocky ridge, glacier day or rock climbing to brush up on technical skills and plan the week.

Monday: Drive to Grimsel Pass at head of Rhône valley and walk up the Oberaar Glacier to Oberaarjoch Hut (3256m).

Tuesday: Ascend Oberaarhorn (3631m)– a training climb amidst magnificent scenery; trek up Fiescher Glacier to Finsteraarhorn Hut (3048m).

Wednesday: Ascend Finsteraarhorn (4274m) - highest of the Oberland peaks - by Hugisattel and NW Ridge (PD); return to Finsteraarhorn Hut.

Thursday: Cross Grünhornlücke pass and ascend Gross Grünhorn (4044m) by SW Ridge – a fine rock and snow ridge (PD+), descend to Konkordia Hut (2850m).

Friday: Descend the ice highway of the Aletsch Glacier to Fiesch, retrieve the car; drive back to Evolene.

Saturday morning: Travel home - check out by 9am

This week aims to head into the Oberland for 5 days travelling hut-to-hut. That means carrying a bit more weight and linking a lot of days in a row - hard work! Typical routes are PD or harder (Finsteraarhorn, Gross Grunhorn - PD but very long!, etc) with lots of possible itineraries.

Running, cycling and gym sessions (in fact, any regular sport) all provide good fitness training for summer alpine courses, but it's hard to beat good days out in the hills. If you don't have easy access to hills, your gym training will need to be carefully planned - mountain days are long, low-intensity exercise, which is hard to replicate in short gym sessions. Strength exercises (squats, step-ups, stair-climbing with a rucksack) are gaining favour over speed exercises (running, spinning).
