PERFORMANCE ALPINISM (2 WEEKS)

DAYS
12

RATIO
2:1/1:1

PRICE
£5,825

An Advanced Mountaineering Course for experienced climbers and regular Alpinists who have completed many successful ascents at AD standard.

This technical mountaineering course offers the chance to extend your experience and skills to accomplish major "grandes courses" at D+, TD and even ED1 standard.

With 6 days of 2:1 guiding and 6 days of 1:1 guiding, the plan is to have 2 mountain guides working with 2 clients to climb as a foursome on bigger, more technical, routes where mutual support and proximity will provide extra security.

This is your chance to climb great routes such as Rochefort-Grandes Jorasses Traverse (D), Kuffner Route, Mont Maudit (D), Schreckhorn South Pillar (D+), Diable Ridge of Mont Blanc de Tacul (D+), Innominata Ridge on Mont Blanc (D+), Weisshorn Traverse (D), East Face of the Grepon (D+), Cassin Route on the Piz Badile, Douves Blanches Ridge (D).

It's best for climbers wishing to tackle the Matterhorn or Eiger to book these trips specifically and we will pre-book the huts. If you decide you'd like to climb these on a Performance Alpinism week you can pay a chf130 supplement at the time (equating to the cost of booking our "Matterhorn / Eiger 2:1/1:1" trip) subject to hut availability.

All applicants need to have regular rock climbing practice to HVS 5a/USA 5.8 level, winter climbing Scottish grade IV. You'll be climbing these technical routes under the leadership of our most experienced mountain guides.

The itinerary will be planned at the first Saturday night brieifing depending on the experience and objectives of particpants and current mountain conditions.

Middle Saturday: Rest day in Evolene

Third Saturday: Travel home - check out by 9am

You will have already climbed Alpine AD routes or similar in other areas, so should be familiar with the effort involved! Fitness is important. Many hut approaches will involve 1200m ascents as the Valais doesn't have the easy lift-access of Chamonix.

Running, cycling and gym sessions (in fact, any regular sport) all provide good fitness training for summer alpine courses, but it's hard to beat good days out in the hills. If you don't have easy access to hills, your gym training will need to be carefully planned - mountain days are long, low-intensity exercise, which is hard to replicate in short gym sessions. Strength exercises (squats, step-ups, stair-climbing with a rucksack) are gaining favour over speed exercises (running, spinning).

"It may seem trivial to talk of the quality of the food when talking about Alpine mountaineering, but this is a good sign of how well I have been looked after at Frost Guiding. The evening meals are very high quality, while the afternoon tea and cake are very welcome when returning from the peaks. The guides I have climbed with over the last decade have been equally well chosen – a special mention to Gav – and I have felt safe (but never complacent) in their hands. Thanks to Frost Guiding I’ve been able to climb 4000ers by their more interesting routes, from the Ober Gabelhorn, Matterhorn to Weisshorn."
— Steve, August 2022
"A well balanced trip providing increasingly exhilarating adventures in the high alps as the weeks go on, backed up with home from home living when back in the valley. Guides are always excellent, challenging you but recognizing your limits, which results in a glow of achievement for many weeks afterwards. Clearly a trip run by climbers who know what climbers want and need. "
