CLIMB THE MATTERHORN

DAYS
6

RATIO
1:1

PRICE
£3,845

The Matterhorn needs no introduction - the most famous peak in Switzerland... the Alps... the world! Standing on the summit is hard work but a truly unforgettable experience.

1:1 guiding ratio for 6 full days ensures maximum climbing time. We'll have 3 days to acclimatise on technical routes up to AD level before heading to Zermatt to climb the Matterhorn by the classic Hornli ridge.

The Italian ridge may also be an option - it's usually quieter than the Hornli, but even longer, needs excellent acclimatisation and takes longer to come into condition than the Hornli making it a less sure way to climb the mountain. Martin Moran described it as "the finest expedition in the Alps" in his guidebook - let us know if you're keen!

The difficulty and physical challenge of climbing the Matterhorn should not be underestimated. It offers very long and sustained rock climbing, with some strenuous sections on fixed ropes and spectacular exposure. Recent rock climbing and scrambling training plus winter mountaineering experience is essential. A couple of days' prior personal acclimatisation before the trip is helpful.

This 1:1 guiding week can be used to climb both the Matterhorn and the Eiger for a guiding supplement of £400. Please add this on your booking form in the "Extra's" box if required. Note: if planning to attempt both summits in 6 days, clients must have acclimatised beforehand and be able to demonstrate their climbing ability is suitable for such technical routes from the outset (e.g. having completed a suitable mountaineering course with Frost Guiding in the previous week).

Sample itinerary

Saturday afternoon: Arrival at Evolene accommodation from 2pm. Dinner and guides briefing from 7pm.

Sunday: Traverse of les Perrons - a high-quality rock scramble of AD (grade III) standard. Dinner in Evolene.

Monday: Walk to Almageller hut with time for rock climbing in the afternoon.

Tuesday: Climb Portjengrat, or the Rotgrat on Weissmies. Return to Evolene.

Wednesday to Friday: Drive to Zermatt and walk in to Hornli hut. Climb the Matterhorn! Dine out on Friday night.

One day within these last three is "floating" to allow flexibility with summit timing to make the best of weather and mountain conditions. It can be used for rock climbing or single day ascents of alpine routes in the Arolla area (e.g. Couronne de Berona).

Saturday morning: Travel home - check out by 9am.

Extra Info:
You should already have some Alpine experience, but UK winter grade 3/4 and rock grade Very Severe wouldn't be out of the question. Fitness is crucial. The Matterhorn involves pulling on fixed ropes so arm strength helps - work on this if you're not a rock climber! It involves lots of down-climbing (an over-looked skill in the UK as we can walk off most climbs). Train by linking scrambles up and down, or by going to Skye where there's no choice! It's usual to have timed "cut-off" points on the Matterhorn - 2.5 hours to Solvay for example. This comes from guiding experience on the route, and is a very good pointer to overall time on the route. The old adage that "the summit is only halfway" is very true on the Matterhorn - in fact it often takes longer to get back down so having some reserve fitness is vital.

Running, cycling and gym sessions (in fact, any regular sport) all provide good fitness training for summer alpine courses, but it's hard to beat good days out in the hills. If you don't have easy access to hills, your gym training will need to be carefully planned - mountain days are long, low-intensity exercise, which is hard to replicate in short gym sessions. Strength exercises (squats, step-ups, stair-climbing with a rucksack) are gaining favour over speed exercises (running, spinning).

"Just can’t express my gratitude Graham – you were just the perfect guide, and Janine keeping my options open with the state of the Liongrat. I break out into a grin thinking about every single day of the trip."
— Tom, August 2024
"Well, I’ve been back a month now after my fantastic trip to the Alps. I just wanted to thank you and the team at Frost Guiding for another great experience, one that was particularly special after my Matterhorn climb, my lifelong dream for the last 40 years! Please could you pass on my thanks to Tatu who was fantastically patient, always calm despite my mistakes, and encouraging. We did also have a lot of laughs along the way! The food was again exceptional and plenty of it so please thank Chet too who has honed his cake making skills to perfection."
— James, August 2024
"We were prepared really well for Matterhorn. Tamsin was excellent. She went out of her way to make sure that I was comfortable, confident and enjoying myself. I was very grateful for her sensitive guiding style."
— Charmaine, July 2018
