WINTER ROOM HIGH SUMMITS

Join us for a week of ski touring in the Swiss Valais.

Using the quiet high mountain resorts of Evolene and Arolla as a base, we'll warm up on a local day tour on Sunday before heading to a hut to explore further afield in the Valais. The aim of the week is to reach several summits on skis and maybe even a 4000m peak. The plan is to use winter rooms to find quieter mountains - and virtually guaranteed fresh tracks.

Winter room touring does mean carrying some extra weight so fitness is important. We'll need to do 1000m ascents with a 10-15kg rucksack. The Arolla valley and surrounding area have lots of options for day touring too - great for the warm up day and if weather limits hut access during the week.

The week is based in our chalet "Beau Sejour" in Evolene which offers complete flexibility for the itinerary. Skiers will have access to their room for the whole week with no charge for "extra" nights in the valley. Read our 2025 Blog here.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Our Eagle Ski Club events are only available for booking by Eagle Club members. We are unable to accept bookings from non-club members. To find out about joining the club please click here.

Sunday: Warm up day in Arolla/Evolene.

Monday: Ski tour to hut winter room (e.g. Dix hut).

Tuesday: Ski touring to high peak from hut (e.g. Mont Blanc de Cheilion winter summit) and return to Evolene.

Wednesday to Friday: Multi day hut to hut ski tour with 2 nights in winter rooms.

Saturday morning: Travel home - check out by 8:45 (please vacate bedrooms by 8:15).

For our ski tours and ski touring courses we recommend you have a good general fitness level as a starting point (involving regular cardiovascular exercise e.g. hill walking, running, cycling). It's worth adding some strength exercises too - squats with weights, 1-leg squats, step-ups, etc). Strong muscles (and good technique) are crucial to avoiding injury - and you'll have more fun skiing.

The Winter Room High Summits often involves trail breaking in deep snow and some fairly big days - between 1000 and 1500m vertical ascent every day in 2013. It's much harder work than a "normal" Haute Route, as we'll be carrying up to 3 days food for huts (10-15kg rucksack). Expect colder weather, no tracks, arriving at cold huts and having to melt snow and cook food, etc. A trip for the adventurous!

"Wanted to say a massive thanks for the winter huts trip, best touring experience I've had. Really loved the winter rooms, quiet mountains and snow conditions of touring earlier in the season, plus some excellent cooking (I'm not talking about pasta and cuppa soup!)"
— James, February 2024
"I just wanted to send a message and share how memorable the week of ski touring has been for me. As my first ski touring adventure, I feel like I threw myself into the deep end a little bit. I definitely found some of the days very challenging. But there wasn’t a moment when I didn’t feel support and help from one of you guys. So thank you for that. I feel like have developed so much during the 4 days as a skier, and as a person really."
— Nico, March 2022
"Winter room Haute Route - WICKED TRIP! Our first trip with Frost Guiding - def keen for more. Absolutely loved it. Graham is brilliant. Safe, thoughtful, kind, funny, and utterly rock solid/experienced, while pushing us (me!) well out of comfort zone. Stunning route, in beautiful sunshine, with great group. Challenging, exciting, hard work, exhilarating. Thank you so much Graham & Janine."
